Contemporary Drawing & Painting, Central St Martins College, London
I recently completed a Certificate in Contemporary Drawing and Painting from Central St Martin’s College, London.
This was a dream realised.
20 years ago my obsession started with Central St Martins College when I first arrived in London & my girlfriend was accepted to study Fine Art, which cost her an inheritance that was beyond my comprehension & only lasted 2 years, while she also worked at Pret & bought sandwiches home for our dinner.
I lived vicariously through her, continued to meet amazing creative people & went to some eye opening art parties in places of London I’d never heard of where emerging performance artists made me feel all sorts of ordinary & discomfort.
Tonight was my first class with Guy Noble, a real-life, legit teacher at Central St Martins. It was morning there, & night time here, we talked about artists from Eva Hesse to De Kooning, Objective, Abstraction & Expressionism styles, did a drawing exercise which we critiqued, & discussed Acrylics & Oils. Students were from all over, Italy, Dubai & little old me.
While this dream isn’t exactly as I had hoped for in a studio on campus at CSM, & attending art parties every other weekend, I’m all for living dreams, (that’s what we tell our children) any way you can & trying to not let expectations, old concepts & constructs stop me in our modern world.
